The word cocktail was first used to describe a mixed drink (spirits with water, bitters and sugar) in an American magazine in 1806. No one is sure where this term originated, although there are several theories, most of them highly unlikely.

Ironically, it was Prohibition, which made it a crime to manufacture or sell alcoholic drink in the United State from 1920 t0 1933, that established the cocktail as a fashionable drink. Tongue–in–cheek names disguised the contents of the drinks sold in illegal bars and clubs as effectively as some of the strongly flavoured ingredients hid the often unpleasant taste of bootleg liquor.
