About the Author

Alison Holst is New Zealands best–known and most popular food writer and television cook. She made her first national television cooking programme in 1965, a few months after the introduction of television to New Zealand, and published her first best–selling cookbook the year after this. Since this time she has published more than 75 popular cookbooks which have sold over 3 million copies, and is well known for her TV appearances, newspaper columns, magazine articles, radio broadcasts and cooking demonstrations. Alison has travelled widely, studying the home cooking of other countries, promoting New Zealands high quality foods, and bringing home new ideas. Her particular interest is everyday food, encouraging home cooks to produce interesting, tasty, varied and nutritious meals without spending too much time or money. She has her own brand of high–quality bulk wholefoods, Alisons Choice, in many Foodstuffs supermarkets throughout New Zealand. In 1983 Alison received a Queens Service Medal for Services to the Community, in 1987 was made a CBE for Services to Home Science and in 1997 was given an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Otago.

Every year in the late Spring, as the days lengthen and becomewarmer, I start to think about the many pleasures of the next few months

I open the doors and windows between the living room and the part of the garden where we have outdoor tables and chairs, with the barbecue nearby. It is good think that we will soon be eating outdoors as much as we will eat inside.

Family meals will become lighter, and somehow brighter, and our entertaining will be casual and relaxed.

We will benefit from my husband"s gardening by eating salad greens, vegetables and fruit as soon as they are picked, and enjoy the profusion of produce from roadside stalls and local markets.

Just around the corner are Christmas, long school holidays, and extended family visits. Hopefully we will welcome friends and family from the other side of the world, where we have enjoyed their hospitality. We will pack picnics and take them to quiet, clean beaches, winding rivers and green hills with amazing views.

In this book you will find a number of the recipes I use when cooking for the situations above, often with friends and family in the kitchen with me. Some of the recipes are new, and others are from earlier books which have been out of print for many years.

You will also notice, as you read these recipes, that I have sugessted microwaving some dishes rather than cooking them traditionally. Microwaving means that cooking time is shorter, so you spend less time in the kitchen, and it also keeps the kitchen cooler which is important in warm weather.

I would love to think that some of my ideas will become popular in your house too, and become part of your family"s traditions!
