About the AuthorSimon, the son of Peatr and Alison Holst, was born in Dunedin (November 1966). Following a one–year stint at Victoria University, Simon moved to Canterbury University where he completed a BSc in Botany, followed by a MSc (with 1st Class Honours) in Plant Biotechnology. During his last few years at University, Simon and Alison worked together co–writing Meals without Meat (published in 1990) – his first hands–on experience of food writing. After graduating, Simon worked for three years as a food scientist in the Grain Foods Research Unit of Crop & Food Research, Lincoln. After spending a year travelling and tasting his way around the UK, Europe and the USA, Simon returned to New Zealand to take up food writing full–time. Having moved back to Wellington, where he works closely with Alison (presently completing their 13th book together), Simon is enjoying being part of the lively and always changing food scene. When not working (or studying) Simon enjoys spending time with his wife Sam and two young children, Isabella and Theo, and pottering around the house and garden.
